BackStory LIVE!

Published: 6/8/2009

"Forum," WPA Poster Collection, Library of Congress Prints & PhotographsAttention Virginians:  On Friday, June 19th at 5:30 PM, BackStory will be staging a rare, live event. The History Guys will be taping a live performance of the show at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs, in Charlottesville. Admission is free.

The topic for the evening will be “Looking for Work: A History of Unemployment.” The History Guys will take “calls” from the audience, play archival audio, and discuss major turning points in the history of unemployment, with the goal of shedding light on what current high unemployment rates could mean for us as a nation in the near future.

Immediately following the show, the Miller Center will be hosting a meet-and-greet reception with the History Guys. All are welcome; registration, however, is required. You can register online here.

Those residing outside of the Commonwealth can take part virtually by tuning in to the Miller Center’s live webcast of the event at 5:30pm, 6/19. Leave a question or comment during the show and you just might get a live response from the History Guys!

  • Man, that show was GREAT! i want to know the name, again, of the woman (!) who voiced the role of the old dude who was a railroad-man in the northwest, in that fantastic piece written by Catherine Moore. She should win an Emmy … or whatever you call the awards for \radio acting.\ i was SURE she was an elderly man! I hope Catherine writes more \stories\ like this. It’s so rare and wonderful to hear fiction on the radio!
Also, I looooved the voices of the real people that Quimbie taped, talking about being unemployed. That part made me cry.
Please have more live shows, and have them in different parts of the country, the way \Prairie Home Companion\ goes on the road now and then. My husband sat in front our our computer and watched the show online, but we would pay to go to a hall and see it done LIVE!
