Steve Silverman's Useless Information Podcast has an interesting story on the Ivory Soap carvings referred to in this podcast. In fact, there was a murder involving one of the artists recognized by Proctor and Gamble during their promotion is the subject of his February 13th episode:

It was interesting to hear the history of carving sopa. When my sons were Cub Scouts, just a few years ago, they had to carve a bar of soap with their pocket knife to earn one of thier ranks.

As far as the history of odor and cleanliness, I grew up in the 1960s, and TV advertising really pushed using deodorants, antiperspirants, and mouthwashes to avoid unpleasant body odors. So maybe that's when the idea of being clean and odorless started?
